Buy area rug, the common mistakes

You’d be surprised with the mistakes some people do when they buy area rugs. Although you don’t need to be a rocket scientist, a few simple rules are in order, for you to know your way around a little better. Of course, it’s up to you to do the final decision - these “rules” are not, by any mean, strict; they’re just general guidelines that you can chose to follow when you’re considering some new rug for your room… or not.

The first, and most common mistake, relates to size. Some people prefer it small… but the most part usually goes the opposite way, buying very large area rugs, completely “swamping” the room. As a basic rule, you should leave around 30” of floor showing around it – unless you do want a “wall to wall” rug. The second, and probably the worst mistake, is when it comes time for the choice of color and pattern. This is a highly subjective task, but usually, a simpler room “requires” a more colorful and intricate pattern rug, while a highly decorated room goes well with a solid color rug. Its color should make a nice contrast with the furniture.

Buying area rugs is not as difficult as you may think. Don’t be afraid to do some tests. Experimenting with different materials, sizes, and colors can often surprise you with what you can achieve. Keep in mind, however, that although it might look good at first, you should buy a rug that won’t tire you too quickly. So, think carefully, take some time to imagine how you’ll feel about it in the future, and then make up your mind.
